Formats differ by event. Men’s singles is best of five sets. Women’s singles and every doubles event are best of three. If a deciding set reaches six games all, a tiebreak to ten points settles it, the format all four majors have shared since 2022, so no match at Flushing Meadows can run on indefinitely.

Line calling is automated on every court, so there are no line call challenges and no pause while a call is checked. In or out is instant and final, and nothing on the board gets overturned later.
A 25 second serve clock runs between points. It holds the rhythm steady, so games tick over quickly and the scoreline changes more often than you might expect.
Seeds and Storylines in the 2026 Draw
The third round finishes on Saturday, September 5, and the draw is still shaped by what happened on day one. Fourth seed Novak Djokovic lost in five sets to Argentina’s Mariano Navone, his first opening round defeat at a major since 2006 and the end of a 78 match run of first round wins. At 39, his wait for a 25th Grand Slam title now runs into 2027.
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner never made the start line. He withdrew on August 21 with a right knee injury, the first major he has missed since his debut at the 2019 US Open, having not played since defending his Wimbledon title in July. Alexander Zverev, this year’s Roland Garros champion, took the top seeding in his place and has made hard work of it. He went five sets to beat Lorenzo Sonego in round one, then five again to beat Quentin Halys in round two, the first top seed in the Open era to start a major with back to back five setters. The Halys match finished at 2.15 a.m.
Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz came in cold, with a right wrist injury having ended his season in Barcelona in April and cost him Roland Garros and Wimbledon, but he is into the fourth round, having beaten Yibing Wu 6-3, 6-4, 6-1. Aryna Sabalenka is there too after a 6-3, 6-4 win over Kamilla Rakhimova, and chases a third straight New York title as two time defending champion. Elena Rybakina, Jessica Pegula and 2023 champion Coco Gauff can all take the No. 1 ranking here.
