Men’s final, Sunday September 13. Top seed Alexander Zverev beat Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-2 on Arthur Ashe Stadium. It is Zverev’s second Grand Slam title and his first at the US Open, capping a breakthrough year that began with his French Open win in June. Shelton, playing his first major final, could not end the wait for an American men’s Grand Slam champion, which now stretches back to Andy Roddick here in 2003.
Women’s final, Saturday September 12. Elena Rybakina beat two-time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. It is Rybakina’s first US Open title and her third Grand Slam, her second of 2026 after beating the same opponent in the Australian Open final in January. The win ended Sabalenka’s bid for a third straight title in New York and left her without a major for the first time since 2022.

US Open Tennis 2026 Results, Day by Day

Semifinals. Zverev beat Karen Khachanov 6-3, 7-6 (7), 7-6 (6) and Shelton beat fellow American Frances Tiafoe 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5. In the women’s half, Sabalenka beat Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-2 and Rybakina came from a set down to beat Coco Gauff 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Quarterfinals: the defending champion beaten. Shelton knocked out Carlos Alcaraz 6-7, 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 in a match that finished at 3:33 a.m. Eastern. Tiafoe came from two sets down against unseeded Alex Michelsen, Zverev beat Botic van de Zandschulp, and Khachanov advanced when Alexander Blockx retired injured. Sabalenka survived Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-6 (7), and Gauff saved two match points to beat French Open champion Mirra Andreeva 2-6, 7-6 (7), 6-2.
Fourth round. Rybakina ended Naomi Osaka’s run 6-1, 6-4, qualifier Qinwen Zheng knocked out No. 8 seed Iga Swiatek, and Khachanov beat No. 14 seed Learner Tien in five sets. Michelsen reached the last eight without dropping a set, the first unseeded man to do that here this century.
Week one: Djokovic’s earliest major exit in 20 years. Mariano Navone beat the No. 4 seed 7-6, 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in 4 hours 36 minutes on day one, ending a run of 78 straight first round wins. Khachanov then knocked out No. 3 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime, Botic van de Zandschulp beat No. 6 seed Alex de Minaur, and No. 24 seed Francisco Cerundolo came from two sets down to end No. 9 seed Taylor Fritz. Top Seeds and How Far They Went
The two draws could not have gone more differently. The women’s top four all reached the semifinals, the first time that had happened at the US Open since 1975. Six of the men’s top eight were gone before the last four, and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner missed the tournament with a knee injury.

Rankings After the US Open
The biggest change came in the women’s game. Elena Rybakina moved to world No. 1 in Monday’s WTA rankings, becoming the first player from Kazakhstan, man or woman, to hold the top spot, and the 30th woman to do so. Sabalenka drops to No. 2 after 107 weeks at No. 1 since October 2024, the tenth longest run on record. Pegula and Gauff stay third and fourth. Qinwen Zheng, a qualifier who reached the quarterfinals, climbed 69 places.
On the ATP side Jannik Sinner keeps world No. 1 on 12,800 points despite missing the tournament, with Zverev about 5,000 behind in second. Ben Shelton climbed four places to No. 4 and Frances Tiafoe returned to the top 10 at No. 8. Novak Djokovic fell seven places to No. 12, out of the top 10 for the first time since July 2018. How to Read the Scorelines
Men’s singles matches are best of five sets. Women’s singles matches are best of three. If a set reaches 6-6, a tiebreak to seven points decides it, shown in brackets after the set score, as in 7-6 (2).
The deciding set works differently. At 6-6 in the third set for women or the fifth set for men, players contest an extended tiebreak to 10 points, win by two. Retirements appear as “ret.” and walkovers as “w/o”. More on the format is in our guide to how many rounds the US Open has.
