US Open Ranking Movers on the WTA Side
Rybakina finished the job. She beat Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 for a third major title and closes the fortnight on 9,901 points, a career high and the top ranking for the first time. She began the fortnight 434 points behind. Reaching the semifinals had already guaranteed the No. 1 spot under the WTA’s official breakdown, and the trophy settled the argument twice over.
- Elena Rybakina gains 1,760 points on the fortnight and holds the Australian Open and US Open titles at the same time. She also leads the WTA Race.
- Aryna Sabalenka finishes on 7,875, a net loss of 700: 1,300 for the runner up finish against the 2,000 she was defending. Her reign ends at 99 consecutive weeks and 107 in total, one week short of a hundred in a row.
- Jessica Pegula holds third on 7,265, level with her career high, after a semifinal run.
- Coco Gauff adds 540 to reach 7,244 and stays fourth, also beaten in the semifinals.
All four top seeds reached the semifinals, the first time that has happened in New York since 2009. Below them, Iga Swiatek lost in the fourth round and finishes ninth, and Amanda Anisimova, last year’s runner up, sheds 1,170 points to No. 11. Mirra Andreeva and Linda Noskova each banked 300 for quarterfinal runs and hold fifth and sixth.
US Open Ranking Movers on the ATP Side
Sinner withdrew with a right knee injury, his first missed major since 2019. He is only the second reigning No. 1 to skip the US Open since the ATP Rankings began in 1973, after Pete Sampras pulled out with a back injury in 1999. He drops the 1,300 points from last year’s final, sits on 11,500 and stays No. 1. Every other position below him moved.
- Alexander Zverev won the title, beating Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 for his second major of the year after Roland Garros. He gains 1,200 points on the fortnight to finish on 9,690, still second and 1,810 behind Sinner. Sinner cannot add to that total until the Australian Open, since he cannot defend Beijing, Vienna, Paris or the ATP Finals this year, so the gap will move again before the season ends.
- Ben Shelton was the story of the fortnight even in defeat. He beat defending champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five set quarterfinal that finished at 3:33am, then Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals, and finishes at a career high No. 4 on 4,680, up five places. It was his first major final, and the loss extends the 23 year wait for an American man to win a Grand Slam singles title, dating to Andy Roddick in 2003.
- Carlos Alcaraz carried the heaviest load and paid for it. The 2,000 he defended is gone, replaced by 400, leaving him 1,600 down on 5,560. He holds third, and this was still his first event since April after wrist tenosynovitis cost him Roland Garros and Wimbledon.
- Frances Tiafoe reached the semifinals for 700 points and a career high No. 8, up four places.
- Karen Khachanov finished as the biggest mover of the fortnight. He knocked out third seed Felix Auger-Aliassime in round two and ran to the semifinals, worth 750 points and a climb of 24 places to No. 26.
- Felix Auger-Aliassime lost 750 in that second round exit, the mirror image of Khachanov’s gain, and slides to No. 5 on 3,890.
- Novak Djokovic lost in five sets to Mariano Navone in round one, his first opening round defeat at a major in 20 years. Defending 800 and banking 10, he is 790 down at No. 12 and outside the top 10 for the first time since 2018. It is also the first time since October 2002 that none of Djokovic, Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal sits in the top 10.
- Daniil Medvedev, Flavio Cobolli and Taylor Fritz all went out between the third and fourth rounds and finish sixth, seventh and tenth. Arthur Fils touched No. 10 mid tournament after a first round loss, then the American runs pushed him back to 11.

Two matches show the whole system. Djokovic arrived with 800 attached to this tournament, left with 10 and lost 790 in an afternoon. Khachanov arrived with almost nothing to defend, reached the semifinals and gained 750. One result, 24 places, in opposite directions.
The Calendar Quirk Worth Knowing
The 2026 main draw ran from August 30 to September 13, a week later than the 2025 edition, which finished on September 7. Over the same fortnight, WTA players therefore also shed points from the week of September 8, 2025, when Guadalajara staged a WTA 500 and San Sebastian a WTA 125.
