Ben Shelton is trying to end a 23 year wait. No American man has won a Grand Slam singles title since Andy Roddick at the 2003 US Open, and none has reached this final since Roddick in 2006. This is Shelton’s first major final. He got here by beating Carlos Alcaraz in the small hours and then Frances Tiafoe in an all American semifinal.

Alexander Zverev is chasing a second major. He won Roland Garros earlier this year and has now reached the semifinals of all four majors in 2026. He has won all five of their previous meetings, dropping just one set. A win would not make him world No. 1: Jannik Sinner holds that ranking comfortably even without playing here.

Rybakina ended the three peat and took the ranking. Her 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over Sabalenka in 2 hours 21 minutes snapped a 20 match US Open winning streak and denied Sabalenka a third straight title, which only Chris Evert and Serena Williams have managed in the Open era. It is Rybakina’s first US Open and third major, after Wimbledon in 2022 and the Australian Open in January. She is the sixth woman to win the Australian Open and US Open in the same year, after Graf, Seles, Hingis, Kerber and Sabalenka.

She becomes world No. 1 on Monday, September 14, ending Sabalenka’s run of 99 consecutive weeks and becoming the first player from Kazakhstan, man or woman, to hold the top ranking.

How the Tournament Unfolded

US Open 2026 Players to Watch

Sinner never arrived. The world No. 1 won Wimbledon in July, then withdrew on August 21 with a right knee injury, his first missed Grand Slam since Wimbledon 2019. Zverev took the top seeding in his place and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz was seeded second.

Djokovic lost in the first round. Mariano Navone beat him 7-6(5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 on opening night. Djokovic was visibly ill and made 70 unforced errors. The result ended his Open Era record of 78 straight Grand Slam first round wins and was his first opening round exit in New York.

Rain ran the first week. Three straight days lost outdoor play from August 30, pushing part of the first round into September 2. Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong kept going under their roofs.

Shelton beat Alcaraz at 3:33 in the morning. Their quarterfinal did not start until after 11 p.m. and finished 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(7), the latest finish in US Open history. It was Shelton’s first win over a top three player after 17 defeats. The scheduling drew heavy criticism, though the USTA has announced no curfew or rule change.

The men’s seeds were destroyed. Only three of 31 reached the semifinals. Auger-Aliassime, Djokovic, Cobolli, de Minaur, Medvedev and Alcaraz were all gone by the quarterfinals, leaving just Zverev and Shelton from the top eight. Karen Khachanov reached the semifinals unseeded.

The women’s draw did the opposite. All four top seeds reached the semifinals, something the US Open has not seen in half a century. Sabalenka beat Pegula 7-5, 6-2 and Rybakina beat Coco Gauff 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Qinwen Zheng came through qualifying to the quarterfinals. Back from elbow surgery, she recovered from 5-0 down in consecutive matches and beat Iga Świątek 7-5, 6-3, the first qualifier ever to beat Świątek at a major.

Two farewells and a reunion. Stan Wawrinka and Gaël Monfils each played their last Grand Slam. Serena and Venus Williams returned to the doubles on a wild card for the first time since 2022, led the deciding match tiebreak 5-0 and lost it 10-7 to Maya Joint and Chan Hao-ching.

Alexandra Eala went further than ever. Seeded 17th, the highest ever for a Filipino player at a major, she reached the third round in New York for the first time before losing to Iva Jovic 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

Doubles and Wheelchair

Women’s doubles. Kateřina Siniaková and Taylor Townsend, the top seeds, came from a set down to beat the all American wild card pair Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery 5-7, 6-0, 6-2. It completes the career Grand Slam as a team and is Townsend’s first US Open doubles title, a year after losing the final.

Men’s doubles. Christian Harrison and Neal Skupski beat Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz 6-4, 7-6(6) without dropping a set all tournament. It is their second major of 2026 after the Australian Open, making them only the sixth team in the Open era to take both in the same year.

Mixed doubles. Karolína Muchová and Jakub Menšík won the reimagined event back on August 26, beating Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 to split $1 million. The 16 team format ran across two days of Fan Week and drew 363,000 viewers on ESPN2, up 138 percent on 2025.

Wheelchair. Alfie Hewett beat world No. 1 Tokito Oda 6-0, 7-6(5) for a fifth US Open singles title, then took the doubles with Gordon Reid, leaving New York with 37 career Grand Slam titles. Yui Kamiji won the women’s singles and doubles double, and Niels Vink took the quad singles.

Inside the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center

Arthur Ashe Stadium holds about 23,900 after the 2026 rebuild, still the largest tennis stadium in the world. Phase two of the $800 million project reworked the lower bowl and suite levels, growing courtside seating from 3,000 to 5,000 and widening the concourses by 40 percent. The full redesign lands before the 2027 US Open.

Louis Armstrong seats about 14,000. Those two courts have retractable roofs, which is why they kept playing through the first week’s rain. The Grandstand seats 8,125, has no roof, and gives the closest view on the grounds.

The tournament drew a record 1,144,562 fans in 2025. More than 300,000 came through the gates during Fan Week this year, with Fan Access Pass registrations up 66 percent. The USTA usually publishes the full attendance figure the Monday after the final.

The US Open is the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season. The first US National Championship was played in 1881 at the Newport Casino in Rhode Island. The men’s event moved to Forest Hills in 1915 and the tournament settled at Flushing Meadows in 1978, where it has been played on hard courts ever since.
