US Open Tennis 2026 is over. Alexander Zverev beat Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday to win his first US Open, and Elena Rybakina beat Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 on Saturday to take the women’s title and the world No. 1 ranking. Here is every champion, every final score and what the results changed.
This was the 146th US Open, the longest ever staged at 22 days, and the richest tournament in tennis history at $108 million.

Zverev Wins the Men’s Title
Alexander Zverev beat Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 in three hours 33 minutes on Arthur Ashe Stadium. It is his second Grand Slam title, after Roland Garros in June, and his first in New York.
The second set decided it. Zverev raced to 5-0 in the tiebreak, Shelton dragged it back to 2-5 with the crowd behind him, and Zverev closed it out 7-2. Shelton did not earn a single break point until the third set, when he finally broke a Zverev serve that had held 66 consecutive times. Zverev broke straight back at the start of the fourth and never looked troubled again.
What it means for Zverev. He is the second German man to win the US Open, after Boris Becker in 1989, and the fourth man in the Open era to win his first two Grand Slam titles in the same season. He reached three major finals in 2026, losing at Wimbledon and winning the other two. He also leads Shelton 6-0 in their career meetings.
What it means for American tennis. The wait goes on. Andy Roddick, at the 2003 US Open, is still the last American man to win a major, now 23 years ago. Shelton was the first Black American man to reach a US Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972, and Ashe’s widow Jeanne Moutoussamy-Ashe watched from the stands. It was Shelton’s first Grand Slam final at 23.
Zverev was generous in defeat’s direction afterwards, telling the crowd he knew almost all of them had wanted Shelton to win, and telling Shelton he would bet his own money on the American lifting the trophy one day. He also paid an emotional tribute to his mother, recalling how she refused to accept the limits doctors set for him when he was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at four years old.
Rybakina Wins the Women’s Title
Elena Rybakina beat Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 in two hours 21 minutes. It is her first US Open title and her third major, after Wimbledon in 2022 and the Australian Open in January.
The win snapped Sabalenka’s 20 match winning streak at Flushing Meadows and denied her a third consecutive title, something only Chris Evert and Serena Williams have managed in the Open era. Rybakina becomes the sixth woman to win the Australian Open and the US Open in the same year, after Steffi Graf, Monica Seles, Martina Hingis, Angelique Kerber and Sabalenka herself.
Sabalenka took the loss hard, smashing her racquet on court afterwards and admitting in her press conference that she needed to let the frustration out rather than hold it in.
The New World Rankings
Elena Rybakina is world No. 1. She is the 30th woman to hold the ranking and the first player from Kazakhstan, man or woman, to reach the top. She ends Aryna Sabalenka’s run of 99 consecutive weeks at No. 1, the sixth longest unbroken reign in the history of the rankings. Sabalenka’s career total at the top now stands at 107 weeks, tenth all time.
Jannik Sinner keeps the men’s No. 1 ranking without playing. He shed 1,300 points by missing the tournament but still leads Zverev by 1,810. The pressure comes next: he defends Beijing, Vienna, Paris and the ATP Finals over the next ten weeks, while Zverev has almost nothing to defend.

Novak Djokovic falls to No. 12 after his first round exit, his first time outside the top 10 since July 2018. For the first time since 2002, no member of the Big Three sits in the top 10.
How US Open Tennis 2026 Unfolded
Sinner never arrived. The world No. 1 won Wimbledon in July, then withdrew on August 21 with a right knee injury, his first missed Grand Slam since Wimbledon 2019. Zverev inherited the top seeding.
Djokovic went out in the first round. Mariano Navone beat him 7-6(5), 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 on opening night. Djokovic was visibly ill and made 70 unforced errors. The result ended his Open era record of 78 straight Grand Slam first round wins and was his first opening round exit in New York.
Rain ran the first week. Three straight days lost outdoor play from August 30, pushing part of the first round into September 2. Arthur Ashe and Louis Armstrong played on under their roofs.
Shelton beat Alcaraz at 3:33 in the morning. Their quarterfinal did not start until after 11 p.m. and finished 6-7(5), 6-1, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(7), the latest finish in US Open history. It ended the defending champion’s tournament and was Shelton’s first win over a top three player after 17 defeats. The scheduling drew heavy criticism, and Venus Williams had already opened the fortnight with a match that began at 12:13 a.m. No curfew or schedule change has been announced.
The men’s seeds collapsed. Only three of 31 reached the semifinals. Auger-Aliassime, Djokovic, Cobolli, de Minaur, Medvedev and Alcaraz were all gone by the quarterfinals. Karen Khachanov reached the last four unseeded.
The women’s draw held firm. All four top seeds reached the semifinals, something the US Open has not seen in half a century. Sabalenka beat Jessica Pegula 7-5, 6-2 and Rybakina beat Coco Gauff 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.
Qinwen Zheng reached the quarterfinals from qualifying. Back from elbow surgery, she came from 5-0 down in consecutive matches and beat Iga Świątek 7-5, 6-3, the first qualifier ever to beat Świątek at a major.
Two farewells and a reunion. Stan Wawrinka and Gaël Monfils each played their last Grand Slam. Serena and Venus Williams returned to the doubles on a wild card for the first time since 2022, led the deciding match tiebreak 5-0 and lost it 10-7 to Maya Joint and Chan Hao-ching.
Alexandra Eala went further than ever. Seeded 17th, the highest ever for a Filipino player at a major, she reached the third round in New York for the first time before losing to Iva Jovic 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.

US Open Tennis 2026 Prize Money
The tournament paid out $108 million, up 20 percent on the $90 million record set in 2025 and the first Grand Slam to pass $100 million in player compensation. Men and women earned identical amounts at every round. Zverev and Rybakina each took $5.5 million.

Doubles and mixed doubles champions each took $1 million per team, with $500,000 for the runners up. Wheelchair singles champions earned $104,000. The USTA ran a $2 million player support programme on top of the purse, and the first round cheque rose 27 percent, the biggest jump of any round.

Doubles, Wheelchair and Juniors
Men’s doubles. Christian Harrison and Neal Skupski beat Kevin Krawietz and Tim Pütz 6-4, 7-6(6) without dropping a set all tournament. It is their second major of 2026 after the Australian Open, making them only the sixth team in the Open era to take both in the same year.
Women’s doubles. Kateřina Siniaková and Taylor Townsend came from a set down to beat the all American wild card pair Ashlyn Krueger and Robin Montgomery 5-7, 6-0, 6-2, completing the career Grand Slam as a team. It is Townsend’s first US Open doubles title, a year after losing the final.
Mixed doubles. Karolína Muchová and Jakub Menšík won the reimagined event on August 26, beating Belinda Bencic and Flavio Cobolli 6-3, 1-6, 10-6 to split $1 million. The 16 team format ran across two days of Fan Week and drew 363,000 viewers on ESPN2, up 138 percent on 2025.
Wheelchair. Alfie Hewett beat world No. 1 Tokito Oda 6-0, 7-6(5) for a fifth US Open singles title, then took the doubles with Gordon Reid, leaving New York with 37 career Grand Slam titles. Yui Kamiji completed the same singles and doubles double on the women’s side, partnering Zhu Zhenzhen. Niels Vink won the quad singles, and Sam Schröder and Guy Woodman took the quad doubles.
Juniors. Maks Latak came from a set down to beat top seed Gabriel Miguel 3-6, 7-5, 7-6(13) in the boys’ final, then lost the doubles final. Xinyu Sun won the girls’ singles, and the American twins Annika and Kristina Penickova took the girls’ doubles.

Inside the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center
Arthur Ashe Stadium holds about 23,900 after the 2026 rebuild, still the largest tennis stadium in the world. Phase two of the $800 million project reworked the lower bowl and suite levels, growing courtside seating from 3,000 to 5,000 and widening the concourses by 40 percent.
Louis Armstrong seats about 14,000. Those two courts have retractable roofs, which is why they kept playing through the first week’s rain. The Grandstand seats 8,125, has no roof, and gives the closest view on the grounds.
More than 300,000 fans came through the gates during Fan Week this year, with Fan Access Pass registrations up 66 percent. The USTA has not yet published a total attendance figure for 2026. The US Open is the fourth and final Grand Slam of the season. The first US National Championship was played in 1881 at the Newport Casino in Rhode Island.
