Men: Alexander Zverev beat Ben Shelton
Alexander Zverev, seeded 1, beat Ben Shelton 6-3, 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-2 on Sunday 13 September to win his first US Open title. It is his second major of the season after the French Open, making him the fourth man in the Open Era to win his first two majors in the same year, after Jimmy Connors in 1974, Guillermo Vilas in 1977 and Jannik Sinner in 2024. He is the first German man to win the US Open since Boris Becker in 1989, and finishes the season 25-2 in major matches, the most by a German man in history and the most by any man in a calendar year since Novak Djokovic.
Shelton’s run extended the wait for an American men’s champion to 23 years, since Andy Roddick in 2003. He remains the first African American man to reach a major final since MaliVai Washington at Wimbledon in 1996, and the first at the US Open since Arthur Ashe in 1972.

Women: Elena Rybakina beat Aryna Sabalenka
Elena Rybakina, seeded 2, beat two time defending champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 on Saturday 12 September. It is her third major after Wimbledon 2022 and the 2026 Australian Open, making her the sixth woman since 1988 to win both hardcourt majors in the same year. It was the first US Open final between the top two seeds since 2013.
Rybakina secured the world No. 1 ranking during the tournament, the 30th woman to reach the top and the first player from Kazakhstan to hold a world No. 1 ranking. Sabalenka’s run at the top, which began in October 2024 and reached 107 weeks, ends with the title.

Shelton beat Alcaraz at 3:33am in the quarterfinal, the latest finish in US Open history, before running out of steam against Zverev in the final. Zheng Qinwen, a qualifier, beat Madison Keys from 0-5 down in the deciding set and then Świątek from 0-5 down in the first, before losing to Rybakina in the quarterfinals. Blockx retired with rib and back trouble while trailing Karen Khachanov, who reached the semifinals as the tournament’s only unseeded man to get that far.
