Zverev won in 3 hours 33 minutes, adding to the French Open he took in June. He is the second German man in the Open era to win more than one major, after Boris Becker, and the second German to win the US Open, again after Becker in 1989. He faced one break point all match.
Shelton was the first Black American man in a US Open final since Arthur Ashe in 1972, and the second American man in this final since Andy Roddick, after Taylor Fritz in 2024. The wait for an American man to win a Grand Slam singles title now stands at 23 years, since Roddick took this title in 2003.
Rybakina won her third Grand Slam title after Wimbledon in 2022 and the Australian Open earlier this year, both of the last two beating Sabalenka in the final. She ended Sabalenka’s 20 match winning run at Flushing Meadows and denied her a third straight title here.

The new rankings were published on Monday, September 14. Elena Rybakina moved to world No. 1 for the first time, the first player from Kazakhstan to top either tour. Jannik Sinner keeps the men’s No. 1 ranking despite missing the tournament with a knee injury.

Only the first match on each court had a fixed start time. Every match after it ran on a “not before” basis, which is how Ben Shelton and Carlos Alcaraz ended up finishing their quarterfinal at 3:33 a.m., the latest ending in US Open history.
Two ticket rules catch people out. A day session ticket admits you only up to 6 p.m. An evening ticket will not admit you before 6 p.m., though evening holders may leave and re-enter until 10 p.m.
Ashe and Armstrong sell day and evening sessions separately. An Ashe ticket adds general admission to every other court, but no other ticket gets you into Ashe. Daily coverage was on ESPN and ESPN2. ABC took all three Sundays: the first round on August 30, the round of 16 on September 6, and the men’s final on September 13. The women’s final was on ESPN. ESPNEWS was not used at all in 2026, a change from recent years.
An ESPN Unlimited plan streamed every match from all 16 courts on the ESPN app, with Multiview for up to four matches at once. Three of the four men’s semifinalists were seeded, Karen Khachanov being the exception at around world No. 50. All four women’s semifinalists were top four seeds, which last happened at the US Open in 1975. Qinwen Zheng came through qualifying and reached the quarterfinals, beating Madison Keys from 5-0 down in a deciding set and then Iga Swiatek.

Who Played and Who Missed Out
World No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdrew on August 21 with a right knee injury, the first major he had missed since his 2019 debut. That handed Alexander Zverev the top seeding, and Zverev made it count. He ends 2026 with two majors, having also won the French Open in June, and 23 major match wins in the season, the most by a German man.
Carlos Alcaraz came back from four months out with a wrist injury to defend his title and reached the quarterfinals before Shelton stopped him. Novak Djokovic lost in the first round to Mariano Navone, his earliest exit at this tournament.
The American run was the story of the fortnight. Ten US players reached the round of 16, the most at any Grand Slam since 2002, and Shelton and Frances Tiafoe made it an all American semifinal. Jessica Pegula and Coco Gauff both reached the women’s semifinals.
Venus Williams, 46 and playing on a wild card, lost to Sofia Kenin in a match that started at 12:13 a.m., the latest start in tournament history. Serena Williams returned to play mixed doubles with Carlos Alcaraz. Two careers ended: Stan Wawrinka, the 2016 champion, lost in the first round of his last major, and Gael Monfils played his final Grand Slam match, beaten by 20 year old Learner Tien.
