Sunday: half the quarterfinal field is set. Carlos Alcaraz beat Tommy Paul 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 and now meets Ben Shelton, who dismissed Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-2, 6-3, 6-4. Frances Tiafoe beat Daniil Medvedev 7-6 (1), 6-4, 7-6 (6) and faces Alex Michelsen, the first unseeded man this century to reach the US Open quarterfinals without dropping a set. That match guarantees an American in the semifinals.
The women’s last eight took shape too. Aryna Sabalenka beat Taylor Townsend 6-4, 6-3 and meets Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova, who edged No. 11 seed Marta Kostyuk 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. Jessica Pegula beat No. 16 seed Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 6-4 and plays Emma Navarro, a 6-4, 6-2 winner over No. 21 seed Anna Kalinskaya.
Saturday: Fritz and Cobolli fall. No. 24 seed Francisco Cerundolo came from two sets down to beat No. 9 seed Taylor Fritz 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. No. 28 seed Alexander Blockx knocked out No. 5 seed Flavio Cobolli. Zverev beat No. 25 seed Alejandro Tabilo 6-2, 7-6 (2), 6-2, and Learner Tien won a five-setter against No. 17 seed Jakub Mensik.
In the women’s draw, Qinwen Zheng beat No. 22 seed Madison Keys 1-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5 after Keys had led 5-0 in the deciding set. No. 24 seed Anastasia Potapova put out No. 10 seed Amanda Anisimova 6-2, 7-5, and Iva Jovic ended Alexandra Eala’s run 7-5, 3-6, 7-5.
Week one: Djokovic’s earliest major exit in 20 years. Mariano Navone beat the No. 4 seed 7-6, 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 in 4 hours 36 minutes on day one, ending a run of 78 straight first round wins. Karen Khachanov then knocked out No. 3 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime and Botic van de Zandschulp beat No. 6 seed Alex de Minaur, both in the second round. Top Seeds and Defending Champions
Aryna Sabalenka is the two-time defending champion and No. 1 seed. A third title in a row would make her the first woman to three-peat in New York since Serena Williams in 2012, 2013 and 2014.
Carlos Alcaraz defends the men’s title as the No. 2 seed after world No. 1 Jannik Sinner withdrew with a knee injury. The men’s draw has been brutal on its top eight: six of them are already gone.

How to Read the Scorelines
Men’s singles matches are best of five sets. Women’s singles matches are best of three. If a set reaches 6-6, a tiebreak to seven points decides it, shown in brackets after the set score, as in 7-6 (3).
The deciding set works differently. At 6-6 in the third set for women or the fifth set for men, players contest an extended tiebreak to 10 points, win by two. Retirements appear as “ret.” and walkovers as “w/o”. More on the format is in our guide to how many rounds the US Open has.
