It has been a difficult year for tennis and not only because of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Australian Open was held before countries around the world started going into lockdown, but Australia was feeling the effects of the bush fires that had plagued the country since the beginning of the year.

The French Open and Wimbledon did not go ahead, but the US Open will be played behind closed doors. The tournament received a boost when Williams confirmed that she would be competing. She announced her participation via video link, saying that was she excited to have the opportunity to play tennis again, even though she would miss playing in front of a crowd.

One of the main reasons why Williams may be so keen to participate in the tournament is because she is looking to equal or beat the record for most grand slam titles. The record has currently been held by Margaret Court since 1973 when she won the US Open title.
